The Concierge Heritage

From foster care and 17 different homes to the cover of Canadian Real Estate Magazine.

RenoResQ was built on a foundation most contractors can't match — over two decades of hands-on renovation experience, 17 years in property management, operational leadership that turned WestJet's worst airport station into its best, and direct involvement in over 130 real estate transactions. That depth of experience is now codified into The RenoResQ System — a repeatable set of standards, protocols and checklists that ensures every project is delivered to the same hospitality-grade standard, regardless of who is on site.

The Story

Built from nothing. Proven by everything. Codified into a system.

Troy MacDonald spent his childhood in foster care and then bounced through 17 different homes — foster families, relatives, and friends' families — before he was on his own. No family safety net. No inheritance. No connections.

Just a decision, made early, that the circumstances he was born into would not define the life he built. That decision has shaped everything since.

From hotel concierge to home steward

Troy started out on his own in Calgary. He did a short stint at SAIT in a business program, and realized fast that he wasn't going to learn what he needed in that room. So he left, and went to work.

His first real job was at a Sheraton hotel in Calgary, working as a concierge and bellman. That's where he learned what real service looks like — on the front line with guests every day, handling requests, solving problems, and making people feel looked after. He was nominated for Calgary's White Hatter Award for customer service, a significant recognition for a young man who had just decided to skip the traditional path.

That hotel experience is where the "concierge" part of RenoResQ really comes from. This isn't about being a weekend handyman. It's about making your home refresh feel like dealing with a good hotel: clear communication, attention to detail, and the sense that someone is quietly taking care of things in the background.

Troy's hands-on education in renovation started in 2002 — on his own properties. Over the course of owning ten homes, he improved every single one, learning what adds real value and what doesn't.

Three of those were turn-of-the-century homes that he personally gutted and rebuilt — six-figure renovations that taught hard lessons about older homes, proper building methods, and the cost of cutting corners.

Every one of those homes sold for significantly more than he paid. Inspired by the "Make It Right" philosophy of Mike Holmes, he taught himself through trial and error, at his own expense, before ever charging a dollar for his skills.

That foundation grew into a full renovation operation — three crews running across multiple worksites simultaneously. The standards Troy developed on his own homes became the standards his teams were held to.

Today, those same standards are codified into The RenoResQ System — the Zero-Trace Protocol, the Pristine-Path mandate, the 48-Hour Quote turnaround, and the Residence Stewardship program.

In plain English: we protect your floors, keep the site tidy every day at 5 PM, quote fast, and look after your home like you're out of town.

When you hire RenoResQ, you are buying a system, not just a person.

In 2003, Troy relocated to Winnipeg to manage WestJet's airport base — overseeing a staff of 154 people. The station was the airline's worst performer.

Within eighteen months, he transformed it into number one across every metric: on-time performance, baggage handling, customer service and employee satisfaction. It held that top ranking for three consecutive years.

That experience is the DNA of RenoResQ's hospitality-first approach — the same discipline that runs a world-class airline operation now runs your home refresh. It is why we call ourselves Home Stewards, not contractors.

After achieving every goal he set at WestJet, Troy transitioned into real estate in 2009. He earned his license and joined Re/Max, where he was personally involved in the sale of more than 130 Winnipeg homes.

He learned what buyers see the moment they walk through a door. He learned which updates actually move the needle on a sale — and which ones are a waste of money. That knowledge is baked into every RenoResQ project today.

Alongside his real estate career, Troy built a 17-year track record in property management — overseeing single-family homes, multi-unit properties and apartment buildings with over 100 sets of tenants at any given time.

He knows what wears out, what buyers notice, and what actually needs to be updated versus what can wait.

What this means for your home

  • We know which upgrades actually move the value or sale price of a home — and which are a waste of money.
  • We run your refresh with airline-grade checklists so details don't slip.
  • We treat your place like a long-term asset, not a one-off job.

Why It Matters

The RenoResQ System — Not a Person, a Process

Most contractors see a job. RenoResQ sees a balance sheet. The company was founded on the understanding that a home is an asset, and every dollar spent on it needs to deliver a return — whether that's a higher sale price, a quicker sale, or a better quality of life for the owner.

That perspective comes from Troy's experience on every side of the table — as a homeowner, investor, property manager, realtor and renovation operator. But the real difference is that it has been codified into a system.

Every RenoResQ project follows the same Stewardship Protocol: the Zero-Trace site standard (HEPA filtration, daily 5:00 PM resets, White-Glove Over-Service), the 48-Hour Quote turnaround, the Residence Stewardship program for travelling clients, and the 1-year workmanship warranty with 30-Day Home Tune-Up.

When you hire RenoResQ, you are buying a process — not depending on a single person. That is the difference between a contractor and a Home Steward.
